Herschel Walker Hints at Run for U.S. Senate

Herschel Walker, the former star NFL running back and potential candidate for U.S. Senate, released a video on Thursday, adding speculation that Walker will enter the race to compete against Senator Raphael Warnock.

Walker has been widely encouraged to run in the state that he represented while playing football at the University of Georgia. Former President Donald Trump asked Walker to run for the highly competitive seat earlier this year.

“Wouldn’t it be fantastic if the legendary Herschel Walker ran for the United States Senate in Georgia? He would be unstoppable, just like he was when he played for the Georgia Bulldogs, and in the NFL. He is also a GREAT person. Run Herschel, run,” Trump said in a statement in March.

Last year, Walker endorsed Trump’s reelection campaign last year and spoke in support of the President at the Republican National Convention.

In the video captioned “Georgia on my mind,” Walker exits a car and says, “I’m getting ready.” He proceeds to bend down to highlight the Georgia license plate of the car. Walker has previously lived in Texas.

While he is not an official candidate, a poll released earlier this year demonstrated strong support for Walker in a hypothetical contest against Warnock and other potential GOP contenders. In the competition against the incumbent senator, Walker polled at 48 points and Warnock trailed at 46 points.

While some candidates are hesitant to enter the race until Walker makes an official announcement of his decision, the GOP field is expected to grow. Early this month, three-term Georgia Agriculture Secretary Gary Black became the most prominent Republican to enter the GOP primary.

Walker was active in both the 2020 Georgia Senate elections — endorsing both Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue.
